Since forming in 2010, Lion Mountain Studio has been working with Sydney’s Sierra Leonean community to make beats. And they sound awesome.

Named after Sierra Leone (meaning Lion Mountains), Lion Mountain Studio runs out of a custom-built cupboard studio at Marrickville Community Centre’s Skid Row Radio. Each Sunday the cupboard opens its doors to members of the newly arrived and refugee African communities, holding workshops and one-on-one sessions with members of Sydney’s electronic and hip hop communities, including Seekae, Killaqueenz, Thomas William and members of the ONEOFOUR Collective.

After two years of skilling up on songwriting, beat making and production, Lion Mountain Studio is proud to unveil the release of Sounds of the Lion, a compilation showcasing the finest Sierra Leonean sounds this side of the Indian Ocean. Mixing English with the native Krio, Sounds of the Lion stylistically borrows from rap, hip-hop, grime, moombahton, dancehall and dubstep to create a unique mix of sounds, influence and experience. The album coincides with the debut release from Lamtech, a single that’s part retro rap à la The Cool Kids, part gangsta blap, all swagger.

To celebrate the release participants and volunteers from LMS will be performing at the Red Rattler, Marrickville on Saturday March 10. Perform? We mean party. Join The Sierra Sisters, Lamtech, LL Bock, DJ Funzo, 48/4, O Squid, Sounds Revolution and morein what will be one very sweaty night.

Tracks from the forthcoming Sounds of the Lion compilation are available to download at http://lionmountain.bandcamp.com/

Lion Mountain artists Lamtech, Alpha, LL Book and Sierra Sisters performed at the Marrickville Festival last Sunday. They sang their group song and then each artist did a solo performance which got the crowd dancing on their feet. The festival was banging with live entertainment from local performers.

Thomas William (formerly Cleptoclectics) dropped into the studio last Sunday to teach a great class on sampling from vinyl! Along with his 1200 he brought in an MPC1000 to show off some retro sample chopping and pad bangin. You can check out some Thomas William beats on his soundcloud.

In other news... Some of the Lion Mountain team will be playing a set at Marrickville Festival this Sunday the 23rd of October. They're on at 11:20am so come on down for some big tunes and tasty food.

Lion Mountain Studio is proud to present it’s debut single, the Sierra Sisters with Shake It.

Having arrived in Australia in 2004 from their home in Sierra Leone, sisters Yarrie (17) and Isata (16) have been attending writing and production workshops at Lion Mountain Studios since 2010, where the track was written.

Recorded at Radio Skid Row in the custom built cupboard studio where Lion Mountain have made their home, ‘Shake It’ is about being in the moment – as Isata says they intended the track to help people “forget about what’s worrying you and dance your head off.”

And a track for you to dance your head off it is! Benefiting from influences as diverse as Wiz Khalifa, India Aria andthe KillaQueenz, and working with volunteer producers from Sydney including members of ONEOFOUR collective, Seekae, Cleptoclectics, 48/4 and Tobio, Shake It celebrates the Sierra Sisters’ spirited approach to music making.

“Lion Mountain Studio has persuaded me to continue with my music career and has given me the confidence to stand proud as a female rapper,” said Yarrie, one half of the Sierra Sisters.

Among the many benefits that Lion Mountain Studio has brought to the community, the studio is proud to introduce the Sierra Sisters. Enjoy!
